Definitely not on the Bayly's radar... and the thing is, St. Olympias was one of MANY deaconesses during her time. Not sure why that surprised me. Early Christians didn't have the same kind of gender hang-ups that have popped up in the West. I don't doubt that the majority of these Christian women were wives and mothers. There are many Saints who did just that. But there are even MORE female Saints who didn't do that. They were evangelists, missionaries, martyrs, deaconesses, prophetesses (such as Anna in the Temple).

I'm not trying to say these women were BETTER than their domestic sisters. But what I am saying is that we should not ignore their contribution to the spread of Christianity or its continued survival simply because they are WOMEN.

And now I'm done preaching to the choir :-)

I've read bits and snatches about her on the internet, from various sites, including quotations of Chrysostom's letters to her while he was banished.

It is obvious she was a deacon to the church of her day, and was appointed as such by the elders of that day. It is also plain that her service included both male and female recipients of her charities, and that she was consulted by male leaders in the church for advice.

It's obvious that by and large (with some pastoral oversight when she overdid it), she determined who the recipients of her charity and hospitality would be.

She wouldn't fit very well in the Baylys' churches, would she? ;-)

Stella, thanks for your comment and for the link you provided. I'm going to leave it up, but I'm not going to provide an answer for the points in the article. I hope that's okay. People are free to believe as they are convinced in their own minds. I would just humbly suggest reading this article on Mary's Ever-Virginity, a doctrine held by even the fathers of the Protestant tradition:

http://www.orthodoxwiki.org/Theotokos#Ever-Virginity

This article gives a good answer to the points brought up in the link you provided- especially the answers from Scripture. Peace of Christ to you,

Cally

Elizabeth, I don't know how we missed your blog the last time we did a round with the patrios. But I LOVE IT! Your story is incredibly inspiring and you are brutally honest, which is something I appreciate a good deal. I hope to do some more "non-Saintly" writing here. I'm trying not to get too sucked in though :-)

BTW- I live in Orange County too! Its fun to read your posts about life down here... and when you mentioned Calvary Chapel, I had to chuckle. I used to go to Big Calvary back in the day. I don't think there's a single Christian living in Orange County who hasn't been through Papa Chuck's church at some point or another.

FINALLY! Sheesh I've been waiting forever for you to start writing again. It's been a lonely world out here trying to deconstruct the hurtful, wrong teachings of patriarchy! :) Wow. Orthodox Church! Saaaa-weeeeet! Don't you just love how the RCC and Orthodox Church celebrate and embrace women--in ALL their varying capacities and gifts? It has been eye opening to me, too. Anyway, please keep writing! I've missed you!
